Male Reproduction

Spermatogenesis

Regulatory Mechanism- white blood cells can't get in

Stage 1: Proliferation
Mitosis- replicates DNA and divides in two
Spermatogonia= full anout of chromosomes

Stage 2: Meiosis
Replicates and divides-
Spermatocytes= each has one strand of chromosomes

Stage 3: Differentiation
development of the head and tail

Every sperm and egg has different DNA that is why mating doesn't produce the exact same product every time

Spermiation is the release of the sperm cells into the lumen and they get released tail first

Sperm Abnormalities:
  • Primary
    • genetic in nature and permanent
  • Secondary
    • caused by fever/infection/trauma
  • Head: craters, tapered, ruffled
  • Tail: coiled, folded, double midpiece, detached head
Sexing Semen:

Reproductive Behavior:

Precopulatory Behavior
  • Search for sexual partner
  • Courtship
  • Sexual arousal
  • Erection
  • Penile protrusion
Copulatory Behavior
  • Mounting
  • Intromission
  • Ejactulation
Postcopulatory Behavior
  • Dismount
  • Refractory period
  • Memory
Senses:
  • Smell (olfactory)
  • Hearing/sound (audible)
  • Sight/vision (this might be more important to a bull than smell)
  • Touch/tactile
Flehmen Response= the lip curling that horses, cattle, and sheep do. They shut off their nostrils and take in the smell through the top of their mouth. This is not always reproductive related because they will also do it with new smells such as a new mother will smell her new calf and demonstrate the Flehmen Response.
